Leap Castle is sometimes dubbed as the most haunted place in Ireland, it certainly possesses a particularly bloody history. It is located in Co. Offaly, just outside the town of Roscrea. It was built in the middle of the thirteenth century by the O’Bannon clan and it became known as Leim Ui Bhanain or Leap of the O’Bannon’s. The O’Bannon’s were subject to the ruling O’Carroll clan. It is recorded in the Annals of the Four Masters that in the early sixteenth century the Earl of Kildare, Gerald Fitzgerald attempted to seize the castle but was beaten back by the O’Carroll’s. Around the same time a fierce and bitter battle for succession ensued amongst the O’Carroll’s which turned them against one another. One brother murdered another, who was a priest, in what has since become known as the ‘Bloody Chapel’ while he was conducting a ceremony. Another source of evil which may have contributed to the present existence of spirits was discovered in the late nineteenth century. It was an oubliette which is a dungeon which was only accessible from a high hatch in the ceiling. There were spikes at the bottom of the shaft, prisoners were flung in there, if not killed instantly they lay gored on the spikes or were left to die of starvation. It took workers three cartloads to carry out all the human bones at the bottom. As a result of it’s bloody history, the castle gained a reputation of being haunted, it was eventually gutted by fire, boarded up and locals completely avoided it. In 1659, the castle passed into the ownership of the Darby family, many Darby’s became high sheriff’s of King’s County (present day, Co. Offaly). In the late 1800s, Mildred Darby became involved with the occult and it said released one of the most vile, evil and disturbing of spirits – the elemental. It is said to be a small, hunched figure who appears accompanied by a rotting stench and a smell of sulphur. In the 1970s the castle was sold to an Australian who had it exorcised, the exorcist stated that she could not rid the spirits but she ensured that they would no longer be malevolent. In 1991 the castle was purchased by Sean Ryan who is undertaking restoration work on it.

California law provides some protections from being unfairly prejudiced by a civil suit that was dismissed or without merit, but you often need to be proactive in protecting your good name.
There are different rules for different types of cases and different rules for who is providing the information about you. This three part series will examine (1) how to seal information from a typical law suit, (2) the special rules that apply to unlawful detainer actions (evictions), and (3) what can and cannot be reported and by whom.
To understand how the records of a dismissed court case can cause haunt you consider the following scenario:
Jane, a software engineer, quit her job when she became uncomfortable with her employer over-billing clients. After she quit, Jane told the client about the over billing. Her former employer was infuriated and filed a lawsuit against Jane that claimed Jane defamed the company, stole company secrets and violated an agreement not to quit and compete against the employer. The court case was dismissed when the judge found the lawsuit was without merit. Jane, who is now looking for a new job and is one of two finalists for a position with a local high-tech company. The company, which is concerned about protecting its technology secrets, performs a background check that searches surrounding counties for civil and criminal court cases. The company sees that Jane was recently sued by her former employer for stealing trade secrets. The company decides that Jane is not the best fit for the job. While Jane cannot prove it, she suspects that the record of the lawsuit cost her the job.
Jane could have eliminated the risk of being unfairly prejudiced if she was proactive and asked the court to seal the record of the dismissed lawsuit. California Court Rule 2.550 provides the constitutional standard and procedure a court will use when someone requests to seal a court record that would otherwise be public. Because of strong First Amendment support promoting public access to court records, sealing a record is an uphill battle.
California courts will use a balancing test in deciding whether or not to grant a request to seal a record. The court weighs the First Amendment right of public access to court records against any “overriding interests” that support sealing the record to determine if the request should be granted. While the Rules do not define what may qualify as an “overriding interest,” a person’s interest in housing or earning income definitely qualifies.
In the scenario above, Jane could have argued to the court that her “overriding interests” included protecting her ability to obtain a job and earn a living. Her argument would be strengthened because the claims in the dismissed lawsuit are taken very seriously by her prospective employers. The court would seal the record and prevent it from ever being disclosed if it found that the threat of potential harm to Jane’s career prospects outweighed the public’s interest in knowing about the dismissed lawsuit.
If you do not have the time or resources to petition a court to seal the record, you might be able to take advantage of special rules based on the nature of the case, or you may even be able to prevent a credit agency from reporting it. These options are discussed in part 2 and part 3 of this series on Keeping Old Law Suits From Haunting Your Future.

Ross Castle
This castle is said to be haunted by several spectres, including Sabrina and Owen, a couple who died whilst on a boat trip. An investigation took place in 2006 to try and prove the stories true once and for all, however, it unfortunately didn’t result in any substantial evidence, the participants simply all agreed that there was something there.
The Castle Inn
This Inn is believed to be frequented by the ghost of poet, James Clarence Mangan. The poet died of cholera and it is said that when he enters the Inn, the temperature drops and the mood darkens.
Renvyle House Hotel
This hotel seems to be haunted by some very determined ghosts as they still haunt the hotel, even after it has been completely rebuilt. The unexplained goings-on have included; groans, doors opening and closing without any explanation, bedsheets flying off and even hotel guests being thrown out of their beds. Perhaps most frightening of all are the voyeuristic ghosts that have been spotted in the mirrors by female guests who are undressing.
Ballygally Castle Hotel
This hotel is said to be home to the ghost of Lady Isabella Shaw. She resides here because she was imprisoned in the 17th century for giving birth to a girl instead of a boy. Lady Isabella, broken-hearted, clutched her child and jumped from the window. Today, Lady Isabella knocks on doors in the hotel disturbing a few guests; however, it is probably the haunting wailing of the baby that is heard which no doubt sends more shivers down spines.
Dobbins Inn Hotel
This hotel was once a tower in the 13th century. Family member Elizabeth Dobbin, who lived in the tower, had an affair with a soldier, much to the dismay of her husband who is said to have killed them both with his sword. Ever since this, Elizabeth is said to haunt the hotel by caressing sleeping guest’s faces and disappearing into the big chimney. She has also been spotted just keeping an eye on the reception area.
Kyteler’s Inn
This Inn takes its name from Dame Alice Kyteler, otherwise known as “Witch of Kilkenny”. The reason for her title is because she had somehow managed to survive several of her wealthy husbands. Accusations then began to spread of wrongdoing and witchcraft. In order to protect herself and her son, Alice bought their freedom, leaving their servant Petronella to be burned at the stake. It is therefore widely thought that Petronella is the female ghost who haunts the grounds of the Inn.
